At the website below, the terms "nursing assistant" and "certified nursing assistant" are used interchangeably. I think the real step up from CNA would be "nurse".

The certified nurse has a degree, while the nursing assistant only has an associate degree

a CNA has to be licensed by the state and goes through medical classes to get the certification a NA is like a caregiver you might have the medical back round but you have to have that certification from the state to be certified

Certified NAs can sometimes pass pills. If you are just a NA you can work in people's homes or group homes, but not nursing homes.

The difference is that one has a certificate and the other one does not.
